Samsung just launched the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, and we had the chance to explore it at a media preview.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 got a new form factor!
The first thing I noticed was how much thinner and lighter it feels. It’s also easier to hold, and I immediately appreciated the new 4:3 aspect ratio.
Samsung also cut the cover display, now featuring a 5.5-inch screen with a 10:16 aspect ratio, WUXGA+ resolution, and 120Hz refresh rate. For me, it is more comfortable for typing, browsing, and one-handed use. Once unfolded, the larger 7.6-inch main display with 4:3 aspect ratio and QXGA+ offers a more tablet-like experience.
For me, that’s what makes the Galaxy Z Fold8 stand out. You can use it as a regular smartphone when folded and as a compact tablet when unfolded, giving you more screen real estate. That’s the kind of versatility I expect from a foldable.
Personally, this is my favorite change on the Galaxy Z Fold8. These new proportions simply feel more balanced compared to other foldables with a tall cover screen and a nearly square inner display.
Its crease is still visible, which may bother first-time foldable users. However, Samsung has improved it, making it less distracting during use.
I also liked the display quality. Both Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels look vibrant with deep blacks, rich colors, and excellent brightness. Whether you’re browsing, watching videos, or simply scrolling through social media, the viewing experience feels premium.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is powered by the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. I didn’t have enough time to fully test its performance during the media preview, but based on the hardware, I don’t expect it to have any issues with multitasking, gaming, Galaxy AI features, or content creation.
For cameras, the Galaxy Z Fold8 features a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and 10MP selfie cameras on both the cover display and the inner display. Sadly, Samsung removed the telephoto camera.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 packs a 4,800mAh battery. It can be considered small for a flagship, especially now that many smartphones offer much larger batteries. Of course, that trade-off helps to achieve its slim design. Besides, the device supports 45W wired fast charging and 20W wireless charging.
Initial Thoughts
So, is this the best shape for a foldable? Based on my first impressions, I’d say yes. The new form factor and new proportions make the Galaxy Z Fold8 feel more practical and comfortable than previous Fold models.

It gives a better balance between portability and productivity. My initial experience has been very positive. It’s definitely a premium-priced device, but if you’re looking for the flexibility of having both a smartphone and a tablet in one, the Galaxy Z Fold8 makes a good option. Even with my limited hands-on time, I can already see myself using it as my daily driver.
