Samsung Galaxy Watch6 Can Predict Fainting Episodes, Clinical Study Finds

Samsung Electronics announced that a joint clinical study with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital successfully validated the ability of the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 to predict vasovagal syncope (VVS) or fainting episodes using AI and biosignal monitoring.

Vasovagal syncope occurs when heart rate and blood pressure suddenly drop due to factors like excessive stress, causing temporary loss of consciousness. While usually not life-threatening, sudden falls may result in serious injuries such as fractures and concussions.

The study involved 132 patients with suspected VVS symptoms during induced fainting tests. Using the Galaxy Watch6’s photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor and heart rate variability (HRV) data, researchers applied an AI algorithm that successfully predicted fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance.

Results showed 84.6 percent accuracy, with a clinically meaningful sensitivity of 90 percent and specificity of 64 percent.

Professor Junhwan Cho noted that up to 40 percent of people experience VVS during their lifetime, with one-third suffering recurrent episodes, making early warnings important for preventing secondary injuries.

Samsung said the research highlights how wearable technology can help shift healthcare from post-care to preventive care. The findings were published in Volume 7, Issue 4 of European Heart Journal – Digital Health and are said to be the world’s first study demonstrating early syncope prediction using a commercial smartwatch.
